Actually really finished

Handed it in, all packaged in a beautiful brown envelope for you to enjoy my ihi and feel the resultant wihi. Feel the rhetoric as it pulses off the 150gsm gloss stock.

FINISHED

Its all mounted and packed up in a folder to be handed in later today. Its been one hell of a journey, with sleepless nights and transfusions off coffee, but i now understand rhetoric and how to use it effectively to persuade my audience with my ihi. What a champion, eh? Na, its been a good one.

Its still week 6

Drama over, my poster is printed (twice actually, because of an F up on their part that left my work streaky), my stock to mount is brought. Just a matter of putting it all together.

Holy F*** its week 6

Received yet more feedback (courtesy of my peers, or colleagues or some really grown up word to refer to my class mates) and now know that my tagline was too big. It was mostly done to balance my composition (because having a centric design is alot of fun to balance). However, thats all the drama, its now down to last tweaks and i can print well ahead of schedule (oh, that time management).

*Insert a bad pun for the title

After recieving some excellent critique, I realized my entire piece was too 'contrasty', making it harsh, the complete opposite of the tone i wanted to convey. So ive toned down all my pure blacks to dark greys and slightly tinted my white so its slightly creamy. Now its just the shear fun of arranging type on the grid and deciding if my tagline isnt too waffly and big, #bigdecisions.

another 'type' of problem

In defiance of the god of good design, I realize lately i have been ignoring this little thing called: THE GRID. Which is terrible practice and i should be smoten on the spot. On the bright side it means my recent slew of developments actually look good. Huzzah and all that. Its still missing something and is a bit ff balance though. However, my message is as clear as the governments neglect of the middle class (ooooh thats political). I'll keep you updated, dearest blogger, on the upcoming developments.

Im not the type to like type

So after a nice development party, i've established (for the millionth time in my life) that my main problem is type and how to make it work in a composition. However i am getting there. The wording itself reinforces my rhetoric; pathos, appealing to peoples feeling and nostalgia in particular. But making it work in a composition is my new goal in life (aiming high, eh?).

I know what i want to develop now! Week 5 edition

So after feedback, we established the interactive poster idea, while neat, isnt the point of this brief. So, its back to the buzzy bee and ive figured out how to move forward on it. Development ahoy.

Week four, again again again

Got the go ahead on the interactive poster idea, so i quickly mocked that up just to have a vague idea to present. To be honest, this idea lacks rhetoric, but its such an interesting idea i want to do a quick exploration. And i developed the barcode idea further, but again, im not really into it; it feels dead endy. But in spite of it all, i shall develop on, like a true soldier of design.

Week four, again, again

Started developing my buzzy bee concept, but im worried ive chosen something hard to develop or is a dead end. However, im looking into somehow doing something interactive (one layer of poster above another, with encouragement to remove pieces of the over poster to reveal an under poster). But if that isnt acceptable, than im confident in developing my other idea with the made in nz logo. Everything needs more rhetoric and thinking caps.

week four, again

This class was also useful in getting a critique on my work, one on one, and getting feed back on the development id done since yesterday. I'm going in the right direction, just needs more clarification and design. More research wouldnt go awry either.

week four, interim

Interim was good. Y'know, feedback and all that jazz. I have a much clearer idea on which ideas to continue developing (bye bye, john key). I just have to focus on making my points concise and use rhetoric more strongly. At the moment i have a tenancy to use alot of pathos (mainly because its accessible to everyone and jerks an immediate response).

I found my funny

So, i have done a humerous development, however, it could be political if im not careful. i really just need to put in a visual queue that will align it with 'NZ made' than a political party, but if i do it right, its pretty crack and thoughtful at the same time. The best mixture, huh. Also, Blogger is American and needs to piss off with all these attempted corrections. My spelling is perf, thanks Blogger. Blogger even thinks its own name is a typo.

Stuff i did in week three, 0.1

Developed my current, un humerous posters. I understand that these are roughs, so im stopping myself from developing all three to a finished state (harder than you think, Massey gave me design standards). They definitely need work, fine tuning and just all over general make overs. They aint concise enough. However, Im moving on and finding my funny angle.

week 3, class two

So we have to produce four different (or slightly different posters) at a3 for our interim (yay, critique). Thats easy enough, thumbnailing like a mad cunt gave me a gazillion ideas. But I want to develop one, at least, that is humerous. Humour is a difficult thing to master, and I like a challenge.

Monday, 28 July 2014

Did more stuff, just thought you outta know. Im just thinking more intently about symbol and meaning and how I can more accurately communicate an idea. I think i will appeal to nostalgia, NZ is a pretty nostalgic country.

Week three, we are half way (isnt that thrilling?)

The importance of taglines was relayed to us, and I will do my utmost as a designer to use them both tastefully and cleverly, and in moderation, this I swear on the name of the God of impeccable design. And i will probably avoid black letter fonts like the plague. I want my poster to be more 'visual', with less reliance being on the type, and the moment where the audience 'clicks' with the message to be mainly communicated visually. It was awesome to get some feed back too. I feel as though I am moving in the right direction and will push my parody of the 'Made in NZ' logo further.

Even more stuff i did in week 2

Because the creative process has a map I don't often follow, I had to re-inform myself of the making the familiar unfamiliar stuff and get off me child labour tangent, which i am now revoking and making a grand return to how big chainstores screw the local businesses. Which lead to more research (because when you think you are informed, you really aren't) followed by doing my A5 mockups or whatever they were. They are mainly based on parody.

More stuff I did in week 2

Because I am so decisive, I have been exploring the child labour side of the argument through thumbnailing, whilst doing more research and finding stuff i would like to play off/parody. Watch out monopoly man.

Week 2, looking at that cracked chess peice thing

I guess it was time we got a reminder on meaning and how little things can F*** up your intended one. Which leads me to say: I will try my goddamn hardest to not make something that strongly resembles Nazi propaganda. But otherwise, a lot to think about regarding this making the familiar unfamiliar, BACK TO THE THUMBNAILS!!!

The teaming up thumbnail thingy from week 2

It was good to get into groups and discuss the matter with people who are (for the most part) equally as informed and as interested in chainstores as I am. And more so to get their side of the argument on it too. Still have yet to narrow down on one specific thing to target, but i am struggling to frame a positive argument for chainstores, even after doing a few pages of thumbnails, they are mostly against chainstores. Oh, the joys of thumbnails.

pictures and key words

Today I have discovered the joys of listing key words, identifying major brands in NZ and trying to figure out how I want to frame my argument: For or Against. Its easier to be against chainstores, and I feel morally obligated, especially after all this research.

Wednesday, 16 July 2014

Just having fun researching the reality of capitalist society, including tracking down stats and graphs from the gov. websites about retail sales in the last quarter and an essay on future retail and urban forms in NZ. Party hard, eh.

Yelling About Voting

Today was useful in that i learnt alot about speaking persuasively, about using the three facets of rhetoric to appeal to a crowd. Even in arguing a point i dont agree with  (ie: not voting). I have finally decided on Chainstores and at the moment i am against it but i will explore both sides. Going with what i instantly think is too easy, so onwards to more research.

The Start

Welcome to the wondrous creative process behind developing a poster, after the lectures today, I have really started researching the two options I was least interested in, ie: voting and megastores. Mainly for the fact I don't really have a set view on them yet and it would be interesting to push myself in a direction i wouldnt normally go. I think chainstores is quite interesting; the effects of captitalism.
